🤔 What is durian ice cream?

Durian ice cream is a frozen dessert made from durian fruit, cream, and condensed milk. It has a rich, creamy texture and a bold, sweet flavor with a strong aroma. It’s popular in Southeast Asia and also comes in a popsicle variant for an easy, grab-and-go tropical treat.

❤️ A note from Praew

The king of fruits is loved all across Asia, especially in Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia. I live in Thailand, and right now it’s the end of durian season, which means lower prices and plenty of fruit available!

I’ve been taking advantage of the cheap prices and making all kinds of durian recipes lately, like these crispy durian chips and this homemade ice cream. This is definitely one of my favorites, and I’ve got so much of it stocked in my freezer right now!

It scoops beautifully from the freezer; it’s thick, creamy, and melts slowly on your tongue. Even if your family isn’t usually into the flavor of durian, this one might just win them over! — Praew ♡

🍨 Ingredient tips & substitutes

  • Durian Choose sweeter durians for a mellow flavor or bitter-sweet ones for a stronger, funkier taste. I used Thai monthong. Use leftovers to make durian cake and cheesecake!
  • Heavy cream Adds richness and creaminess; essential for a scoopable texture without churning.
  • Coconut milk Helps keep the ice cream soft; full-fat is best.
  • Sweetened condensed milk Sweetens and gives the ice cream a smooth, creamy finish. No extra sugar needed!
