🤔 What is shaking beef?

Shaking beef is a Vietnamese dish made with tender beef cubes quickly seared and tossed with vegetables like bell pepper and onions in a soy-based sauce. It has a rich, slightly sweet flavor and is often served with rice or salad.

❤️ A note from Praew

Bò lúc lắc translates to shaking beef. It’s called that because the ingredients are literally shaken in the pan as they cook, instead of being stir-fried.

You’ll love how this method gives the beef the perfect doneness without overcooking, and the sauce clings to the vegetables just perfectly.

🍚 Ingredient tips & substitutes

Tip: You can also add different stir-fry vegetables like broccoli, snap peas, baby corn, or green beans.

  • Beef The best cuts for shaking beef are sirloin, tenderloin, or ribeye. It’s important to use a tender cut since the dish is quickly seared and tougher cuts won’t have time to soften.
  • Bell peppers Red, yellow, or green all work.
  • Red onion
  • Garlic
  • Coconut oil I used it in the marinade for extra richness, subtle sweetness, and a light, glossy finish. Plus, it also helps coat the beef evenly!
  • Oyster sauce Adds a slightly sweet flavor to the marinade.
  • Light soy sauce Adds saltiness. Don’t substitute with dark soy; it’s thicker and sweeter.
  • Sugar I used natural cane sugar, but white or brown sugar can also be used.
  • Black pepper
  • Oil A neutral oil like canola or sunflower oil is ideal for high-heat searing.

This Vietnamese shaking beef recipe is authentic in flavor and method, and a few personal touches make it different from what you might get at a restaurant. Enjoy a quick and easy dinner that’s perfect for busy weeknights!

🥘 How to make shaking beef

  1. Cut the beef into bite-sized cubes and chop your vegetables: red onion, red and green bell peppers, and garlic. Set everything aside.
  2. In a bowl, combine the beef with oyster sauce, light soy sauce, sugar, black pepper, coconut oil, and garlic. Mix well and let it marinate for at least 20 minutes while you prepare the next step.
  3. While the beef is marinating, you can steam rice or make a quick side salad. I used lettuce, cucumber, tomato, red onion, and lime, but feel free to use whatever fresh veggies you have on hand.
  4. After marinating, heat oil in a pan (stainless steel or cast iron preferred) over medium-high heat. Make sure the oil is smoking hot before adding the vegetables. Shake the pan to coat them in oil, then add the sliced beef. Cook and shake just until the beef is nicely browned, and the vegetables are tender-crisp. Serve and enjoy!
